Madama Butterfly

Central City Opera

  • …an effective and deeply moving interpretation.

    Sharps and Flatirons
  • But it is the stage direction and deeply human, emotive performances that carried the night.

    Sharps and Flatirons
  • Moritz said that she wanted to make Madama Butterfly ‘a story about a family.’ In this and other moments she succeeded, devastatingly.

    Sharps and Flatirons
  • Moritz does not shy away from the libretto’s problematic aspects… she embraces them, using them to illustrate her vision in an enlightened way.

A Message From Alison

When Commodore Matthew Perry and the United States Navy sailed to Japan in 1853, the small island country had been culturally and commercially isolated for over two centuries. As foreigners began to arrive, they were generally unwelcome in Japan - and Americans were considered to be brutish and even monstrous. But Japan had recently seen British forces almost completely destroy neighboring China’s navy during the Opium Wars. As a result, the Japanese response to British and American presence on their shores was rapid modernization and militarization. By 1867, reform was sweeping the country.

Far from being a quaint or irrelevant story, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly provides us with a gripping look at the costs of social change. In this case, neither tradition nor progress is sacrosanct - each way of life comes at a very high price. And although Butterfly, Suzuki, Pinkerton, Sharpless, and Kate may be our ancestors - they still have much to tell us about the present day.
